Your fibre is a sensor. Switch it on.
Scatterways reads the temperature every half metre along the fibre-optic cable you already have, and can listen along it too. One field box, rented by the month, run by us. Results on a dashboard, through an API, or as files your tools already open. Configured for your site, and built to order when the standard box does not fit.

Fibre sensing is proven. Getting it has been the hard part.
Instruments that read temperature along a fibre have existed since the 1980s, and good field units exist. What has kept them out of most projects is what it takes to own one. One measurement per box, one fibre type per unit, a vendor toolchain, and a second instrument and a second budget the day you want acoustics too.
Typical today
- A capital purchase, then a second one for acoustics
- Temperature and acoustics usually mean two instruments
- One fibre type per unit. The other type means another unit
- Vendor formats first. A conversion step before your tools
- Adding acoustics later means a second procurement
- The box comes as it comes
Scatterways
- One monthly rental. Instrument, cable, operation and processing in one line
- Temperature and acoustics in one box
- Single-mode and multimode in the same unit
- Open files from the first reading
- Acoustics added to the rental as a tile, not a second instrument
- Configured for your site. Built to order when it needs to be
One box. Two measurements. Your fibre.
Rent it for temperature and add the acoustic tile later, in the field. Or for acoustics. Or both from day one. Pick a configuration below to see it.

Temperature
Distributed temperature on single-mode and multimode fibre. Hydrology, glaciology, geothermal.

Both, time-interleaved on one fibre. Wells, pipelines, combined studies.

Have fibre? Plug it in.
Single-mode or multimode, any common APC connector. Research cables, telecom fibre, downhole cable. Tell us the type, length and where the ends are.
No fibre yet? It comes with the rental.
Armoured sensing cable for stream beds and trenches, slim cable for boreholes, single-mode, multimode or both in one jacket. Terminated, tested and on a reel cut to your length.
Built for people who have a fibre and a question.
Works with the cable you have
Single-mode or multimode, any common connector. Research cables are mostly multimode, telecom and well fibres are single-mode. Most instruments pick one. This one reads both. No cable yet? We supply that too.
Weeks on a battery
One profile an hour, about 20 days on a 100 Ah battery. Add a panel and leave it for the season.
Calibrates on your cable
Designed so field calibration is automatic. Two temperature-controlled reference coils inside the box and a read from both ends of the loop.
Your data, your tools
A live dashboard with the analytics done. An API and MQTT feed if you want to do your own. Files in netCDF, CSV, HDF5 and miniSEED if you just want the data. All three, always.
Installed in an afternoon
It ships in a case. Your technician connects fibre, power and network on a video call with us, or we come and do it. From then on we operate it remotely.
Always the current instrument
You rent the measurement, not the hardware. When a faster digitiser or a new tile comes, it goes into the box on your site. Nothing to depreciate, nothing to write off.
Dashboard, API or files. All three, always.
Every rental comes with the analytics done for you and the raw data open to you. Use whichever fits the people who will look at it.
- for the people who want the answer
Dashboard
Live profiles along the fibre, time series at the points you care about, alarms, and the campaign report. In your browser, shared with your team, nothing to install.
- for the people who build their own
API and live feed
REST for profiles, events and status. MQTT for live values. Modbus for the control room. Pull it into your own dashboards, notebooks or SCADA, on your schedule.
- for the people who want the data
Files
netCDF that loads straight into the open-source toolchain the research community uses, plus CSV, HDF5, miniSEED and SEG-Y. Yours to keep, from the first reading.
The standard box fits most sites. For the rest, we adapt it.
Every rental is configured for the site. When the site asks for more than the configuration menu, we build it. Tell us the question and the constraints, and we tell you what it takes.
- 01
Your sensors
Water level, flow, pressure, weather, your own PT100s. If it speaks SDI-12, RS-485, 4 to 20 mA or pulses, it plugs into the box and lands in the same file. Something else, we add the interface.
- 02
Your site
No power, no network, no road. Solar, fuel cell, satellite link, air-gapped with configuration by hand, offshore, down a 2 km well. We have a plan for each, and we build the ones we do not.
- 03
Your data path
Straight into your hydrology toolchain, your seismology archive, your SCADA or your cloud account. Your format, your alarm logic, your report template.
Temperature and sound. Same cable, same box.
A warm spot at 1,500 m shows in the temperature trace. With the acoustic tile, the same fibre picks up what moves there. Two independent signatures at one point along the cable is a finding, not an artefact.
Start with the question. The fibre answers it.
- Streams and lakes
Where does groundwater enter the stream, and how much?
You get A temperature map of the whole reach every fifteen minutes, all season, from a cable on the bed.
Read more - Glaciers and permafrost
What is the borehole doing through the winter, when nobody can get there?
You get An hourly profile all season, months unattended, summaries over the satellite link.
Read more - Geothermal fields
What is the ground made of, layer by layer, and is the field slowly cooling?
You get Conductivity for every depth instead of one average per hole, then years of monitoring on the same fibre.
Read more - CO2 and gas wells
Where is the injected fluid going, and is the well intact?
You get Temperature and acoustics from one downhole cable, on one clock, next to the wellhead data.
Read more - Pipelines and district heating
Where is the leak, before the road sinks? Hot water, cold water or gas.
You get A temperature change and a noise at the same chainage. The alarm goes straight to your control system.
Read more - Dark fibre seismology
Can the telecom fibre under the road become a seismic array?
You get Thousands of strain sensors at your spacing over tens of kilometres, written in miniSEED.

The box ships
A field case, the cable if you need one, and a one-page checklist. Nothing to configure, nothing to buy.
- 3
Plug in, or we install
Your technician connects fibre, power and network in an afternoon on a video call with us. If you would rather we did it, we come to site.
- 4
We run it. You get answers.
We operate it remotely and do the processing. Results appear on your dashboard, through the API or as files in your formats, and the first measurement report follows.
Tested on your fibre, not in a brochure.
Every unit ships with an acceptance benchmark that is run on the customer's own cable. Every figure we publish carries the fibre, the length and the averaging time it was taken with.
The numbers, with their conditions.
Full specificationsNeed something outside these numbers? Longer fibre, finer resolution, a sensor we have not listed. Ask. Much of it is a configuration away, and we build to order where it is not. Tell us what you need.
